The wreckage of a 173-foot Civil War troop transport ship and its military cargo--sunk in 1864 by a Confederate mine--has been found at the bottom of Florida’s St. John’s River by the use of state-of-the-art marine archeological techniques, Dr. Keith Holland said. The Jacksonville dentist and president of St. John’s Archeological Expeditions Inc. said that the group has found the remains of the troop transport Maple Leaf, which it intends to salvage.
