Former Penney Store Changed for New Uses

A $5-million project is transforming a former JC Penney store at 18341 Sherman Way, Reseda, into a complex of offices and retail shops, according to Abe Guny, owner/builder and principal of NBC Developments Inc., Reseda.

The 40,000-square-foot, brick-and-steel building was filled with dust and obsolete equipment and its only windows were display windows. Architect Alex Miller planned a conversion that is turning the ground floor into retail shops, with offices occupying the second floor.

Windows and skylights were cut for the new spaces and an old but elegant wood stairway was moved to the front. Other renovations included a new facade, sandblasting exterior walls to restore the bricks’ color and installation of more air conditioning and new wiring. Completion is scheduled for July.
