A collection of Orientalist paintings by 19-Century European artists has been sold at auction, with one painting bringing more than $1.2 million.

Fifty-eight paintings, from the collection of Coral Petroleum Corp., brought a total of $7,118,650, according to Carol Morgan, a spokeswoman for the auction house, Sotheby’s.

Frederick Lewis’ “An Intercepted Correspondence, Cairo” brought the top price in the sale, $1,265,000, and set an auction record for Lewis. The 1869 painting depicts a woman in a harem who has been caught by her master with an illicit bouquit of flowers.
