‘Standing Tall’ on Hostages

What in the world is Podhoretz suggesting Reagan do?

He says, “We know very well who the criminals are and where they can be found.” Does he mean we should invade Lebanon? Or perhaps drop a few bombs? Or get the CIA to murder a few (or few thousand) Shias? Does he mean we should take some punitive action (perhaps some “legal military operations”) against Syria and/or Iran?

Why does he think Reagan is not “standing tall” because he doesn’t do something violent? Does he think the hostages--the very objects of our concern--should have been sacrificed in defense of what he perceives to be the national honor?

I don’t understand why The Times publishes such irresponsible drivel.
