The City Council on Tuesday assigned Fire Chief Bob Simpson to serve as temporary coordinator of the city’s convention center, stadium and two golf courses.

While Simpson, who is also deputy city manager, temporarily fills the vacancy left by Thomas F. Liegler, Fire Division Chief Darrell Hartshorn, 47, will be provisional fire chief, city spokeswoman Sheri Erlewine said.

Liegler ran the Anaheim Stadium and Convention Center for 20 years. He resigned to accept a similar position in San Diego, effective July 1.

Simpson and Hartshorn will be in their new positions for three to four months, Erlewine said. Simpson, 55, came to Anaheim from Los Angeles, where he started his fire career in 1955. He is not a candidate to fill the coordinator position permanently, Erlewine said.

City Council members Tuesday also appointed Jack White city attorney. White, with the city since 1977, had been acting city attorney since March, Erlewine said.
