Residents who rent out only one or two apartments will begin paying less for business licenses this month under an ordinance unanimously adopted by the City Council this week.

The ordinance establishes a three-tier fee schedule for owners of apartment buildings with three or fewer units, with owners of one unit paying $14.50 a year, two units $19.75 and three units $25. Previously, owners of one, two or three apartments all paid the $25 fee.

The new ordinance, introduced by newly elected Councilwoman Kay Horrell, does not affect owners of four or more units, who will continue to pay $25 for the first three units and $5.25 for each additional unit.
