La Habra : Demonstration Planned Over Salary Squabble

Share

City workers scrapped the idea of walking off their jobs to protest a pay dispute and will participate in an “informational picket” demonstration today instead.

Tonight, City Council members may vote on a contract offer for the 30 clerical and the 15 professional employees who have been at an impasse with the city, Deputy City Manager Bob Burns said. Burns would not say Monday what that offer would be.

Complaining that their salaries are below the county average for similar jobs, the workers are demanding pay raises that would bring their paychecks up to parity. City officials dispute some of the figures the workers’ union gives as the county average.

According to the Orange County Employee Assn., the average salary for clerk-typists, for example, is $1,430 a month. In La Habra, the same job brings $1,269 a month.

The council meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall, 201 E. La Habra.
