Japanese fishermen rescued eight emaciated survivors from a group of 24 Vietnamese “boat people” who were adrift for two months during the typhoon season on the South and East China seas. Officials of the Maritime Safety Agency said the refugees were spotted near Kagoshima, off the southern coast of Japan. Seven of the eight survivors were in good condition, though suffering the lingering effects of exhaustion, exposure and dehydration. All are expected to survive. They told doctors that 16 of their companions had died on the journey.
