Senate’s Vote on Gun Control

Your newspaper should take a closer look at Switzerland--a country that enjoys a high standard of living, a good economy and a low crime rate. Although the country has a noticeable lack of “gun-ho” cultural traditions, it has, on the other hand, universal conscription. There are a large number of firearms in the homes of Swiss citizens, a custom related to the type of military service the country has.

Every able-bodied man, having served his time in the militia, keeps his guns and ammunition at home. These guns include fully automatic military weapons (highly illegal in the United States). As it might be interpreted, the place is “loaded” with guns, and yet, one has no fear to walk the streets at night and people are not machine-gunned in public places as it often happens here.

Hence allow me a correction to your editorial: People with Swiss guns do not kill people.
