Local News in Brief : Ventura County OKs Study of Proposed Lake

Share

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors has approved $156,000 for a study of the economic feasibility of building a recreational lake north of Thousand Oaks in the Tierra Rejada Valley.

Proposed by Supervisor Jim Dougherty, who represents the Simi Valley and Moorpark areas, the lake would satisfy requests for recreational facilities long voiced by eastern county residents, said Curran Cummings, Dougherty’s administrative assistant.

Officials said they are considering a county recreation area with an earthen dam that would create a 130-acre lake half a mile east of the Moorpark Freeway and south of Tierra Rejada Road. There would be horse trails and facilities for boating, fishing, picnicking and camping, Cummings said.

The study will examine the costs of buying the land and of creating the lake and surrounding park, Cummings said. The study will begin within a week and is to be completed by June.

Cummings said that Dougherty will wait until the study is completed before making a decision on whether to push the project.
