STAGE REVIEW : A FLAWED SATIRE AT THE MEGAW

Share

The Megaw’s “Curse You Villain, or Only an Orphan Girl,” by Henning Nelms, is subtitled “a satire of the melodramas of the Gay Nineties.” One wonders why such a genre needs to be satirized. Wouldn’t it cost less in royalties simply to unearth one of the originals and play it for laughs?

At any rate, Buddy Piper’s actors take the word satire too literally. They toss in lame topical comments on subjects ranging from Downey to Daryl Gates, and overdo every gesture and line so relentlessly that it all becomes wearing. This is the sort of show that you might find in a theme park or community theater. What’s it doing at the Megaw?

Performances at 17601 Saticoy St. are Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m., through Aug. 25, (818) 881-8166).
