The federal government has moved under a new law to seize land used by two suspected marijuana growers, U.S. Atty. Donald Ayers said in Sacramento. Ayers said the cases are part of an “overall national effort” to curb marijuana cultivation. Under a federal law passed last year, an action was filed in federal court seeking forfeiture of 20 acres of Siskiyou County land allegedly used by John Swanson to cultivate 831 marijuana plants. The land cost Swanson $50,000 in 1983. The government is also seeking 400 acres in Yolo County owned by Christopher Rayne, who was arrested May 20 for cultivating 718 marijuana plants on property he bought in 1976 for $180,000.
