Laguna Niguel : Community Council Opposes Oil Drilling
The Laguna Niguel Community Council this week joined Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, San Clemente, Huntington Beach and other local communities in registering opposition to plans to open the local coastline to offshore oil drilling.
The 14-member council, which acts as an advisory body to the Orange County Board of Supervisors, unanimously voted against lifting the moratorium on drilling at six tracts off Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. Additionally, council President Jim Krembas is one of 35 elected officials scheduled to address U.S. Interior Secretary Donald P. Hodel when he visits Orange County this weekend to hear local input on the issue.
However, because the officials will have three minutes each to speak and because Hodel will be in Newport Beach for about 90 minutes, Laguna Beach City Councilman Robert Gentry said it is unlikely that all would be heard Saturday.
