The Nation : TMI Goes On Line Today
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it has given the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, near Harrisburg, Pa., permission to increase power so it can produce electricity for the first time in 6 1/2 years. The plant will “go on line” today after it reaches 15% of power. TMI-1 has not been on the regional power grid since Feb. 17, 1979, more than a month before the adjacent Unit 2 was mangled in the worst accident at a U.S. commercial nuclear power plant. The plant will be taken up to 40% power over the next two weeks.
