The former head of a tax-protest group, the Freedom League, has been sentenced to a two-year prison term for tax evasion. About 400 supporters of Ronald Matheson, 49, of Orange packed the courtroom and jammed hallways when U.S. District Judge David V. Kenyon refused to consider Matheson’s claim of new evidence to buttress his contention that the federal income tax system is illegal.
