The University of California at Berkeley has been warned that unless it can come up with a satisfactory plan to handle toxic wastes, the Alameda County district attorney’s office is going to sue. Deputy Dist. Atty. Gil Jensen notified UC Chancellor Ira Michael Heyman that the county wants UC personnel on and off the Berkeley campus to be accountable for violating hazardous waste laws. Ellen Widess, a representative for UC Berkeley’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety, said the university is applying for a license to transport hazardous wastes. In the meantime, she said, school personnel use campus roads only to carry such wastes to temporary storage sites when no licensed contractors can take the materials.
