Umbrellas May Be in Order Today

A storm rumbling down from the Gulf of Alaska can be expected to drop a little rain--and perhaps even some snow--on Southern California today, the National Weather Service said Sunday.

Rain and snow were already falling on the northwestern part of the state when forecasters offered their prediction of increasing cloudiness and a “slight” chance for rain today in Los Angeles and vicinity, as well as the possibility of snow in the mountains.

Residents of the Lake Tahoe area were told to prepare for 4 to 6 inches of snow, with up to 2 feet expected at higher elevations. Travelers’ advisories for reduced visibility and high winds were issued for the Sierra foothills, changing to winter storm warnings for anyone venturing above 7,000 feet.

Wind, rain and continued overcast were expected for most of Southern California, with the snow level expected to drop to 6,500 feet in the mountains of Kern County, and 35-m.p.h. southeast winds shifting westerly during the day.

High temperature at Lindbergh Field in San Diego was 71 degrees Sunday. The forecast called for it to be about 70 today in most parts of the county, with sunny skies and warmer temperatures returning by Tuesday afternoon.
