S. Africa Activists Deny Treason
Sixteen leading anti-apartheid activists pleaded innocent to charges of high treason today at a major trial in Pietermaritzburg, capital of Natal province.
The accused, all blacks, Asians or people of mixed race and including leaders of the United Democratic Front, the dominant anti-apartheid group within the country, could face the death sentence if convicted. Meanwhile, two more blacks were killed in rioting today and unrest flared within sight of white central Cape Town when youths rampaged through the steep and narrow streets of the Malay quarter.
