The White House issued a strong denial today of any U.S. plans to give the Soviet Union up to seven years notice of its intention to deploy the “Star Wars” space defense system.

The Washington Post said in today’s editions that top officials attending a secret meeting of the Special Arms Control Policy Group Oct. 4 agreed on a five- to seven-year notice period. (Story, Page 15.)

The agreement, the newspaper said, was intended to assure the Soviets of American willingness to negotiate any deployment of the President’s proposed space system, formally known as the Strategic Defense Initiative.

White House spokesman Larry Speakes said the story was “made out of thin air.” He said a time frame was never discussed at the Oct. 4 meeting or any other meeting.
