Councilman Ed Struiksma has been nominated by Mayor Roger Hedgecock to become the city’s next deputy mayor. The post is normally a largely ceremonial one, but it could take on political significance if Hedgecock is expelled from office.
Hedgecock made the nomination public Wednesday when he disclosed his list of council committee assignments. With Hedgecock gone, Struiksma would assume the mayoral duties, including running council meetings, and could enjoy a political advantage if he decides to run for mayor.
Struiksma’s nomination is expected to be ratified by his colleagues. The vote will be taken Monday.
Other nominations made by Hedgecock include Councilman Bill Cleator as chairman of the Public Facilities and Recreation Committee, Councilwoman Gloria McColl as chairwoman of the Public Services and Safety Committee, and Councilman William Jones as chairman of the Transportation and Land Use Committee.
Committee chairmanships are important because these council members set agendas and can better shepherd pet issues or projects through the city’s legislative process.
