Anti-Abortion Petition Fails
An anti-abortion group today announced failure of its attempt to qualify for the June ballot a measure that would have all but ended taxpayer-paid abortions in California, estimated to cost the state about $30 million a year.
The effort by the Children’s Fund to collect the required 630,136 petition signatures failed, proponent Renate Penney said, primarily because of low signature rates in Los Angeles and Santa Clara counties. Campaign workers declined to say exactly how many votes they were short.
