San Diego Prep Baseball Roundup : Hoover Tops San Diego High, 15-3, to Move Into First in City Central
Hoover High School moved into first place in the City Central League Friday with a 15-3 win over San Diego.
The host Cardinals (5-1 in league, 8-6 overall) took the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs off starting pitcher Sean Tucker.
Hoover had 15 hits, led by senior Ty Murphy who had a double, a triple and a solo home run and drove in six runs. Gus Garcia had a bases-loaded triple in the second.
“We’re swinging the bats very aggressively,” Hoover Coach Hal Mitrovich said. “We’re not taking very many pitches. We’re just taking our cuts and taking our chances.”
Hoover pitcher Sal Ceballos (4-2) scattered 10 hits to get the win. The Cavers (4-2, 8-9) had runners on second and third with one out in the first and second innings but failed to score. Elsewhere in the City Central League:
Crawford 6, Christian 3--Dewrell Wesley’s bases-loaded infield single in the sixth inning drove in the winning run as Crawford (4-2, 8-7) rallied to beat Christian (2-4, 8-8-1). After Christian took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, Crawford tied the game, 3-3, in the sixth on a double by Scott Madler. Gene Ward got the win in relief for the Colts.
AVOCADO LEAGUE San Marcos 6, Ramona 0--Marc Villalobos pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out five to lead San Marcos (3-1, 8-5) into a share of first place. The Knights’ Tino Lozano was 3 for 3 with an RBI, four stolen bases and two runs. San Marcos third baseman Jose Canado went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three runs scored. Ramona is 2-1, 7-4.
Oceanside 7, El Camino 2-- Keith Combs went the distance for his fifth consecutive win as Oceanside (3-1, 8-6) moved into a first-place tie with San Marcos and Carlsbad. Finney McCarter tripled in a run in the first and hit a two-run homer in the sixth. El Camino is 0-3, 3-9.
Carlsbad 4, Escondido 3--Carlsbad gained a share of the league lead with a win at home. Carlsbad is 3-1, 7-7. Escondido is 1-2, 8-8.
PALOMAR LEAGUE Mount Carmel 8, Vista 1--Miah Bradbury hit a solo home run in the first inning and the fifth-ranked Sun Devils (3-0, 12-4) beat No. 10 Panthers (1-3, 7-6) at Vista. Ed Vanaelstyn pitched a complete-game four-hitter and Ron Kelly had two hits and an RBI for Mt. Carmel.
Orange Glen 13, San Dieguito 4--Frank Escalante had three hits and Scott Carlovsky and Paul Temprendola each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Patriots (2-1, 9-5) past the Mustangs (1-3, 5-8-1) at Orange Glen. David Miller pitched the first six innings for the win.
Fallbrook 9, Torrey Pines 2--Fallbrook’s Eric McVey, starting in the place of Bill Dunckel who was sidelined with bronchitis, pitched a complete-game five-hitter and struck out six to improve his record to 2-0, as the third-ranked Warriors (2-1, 14-2) beat Torrey Pines (1-3, 3-11). Ty Barksdale paced Fallbrook with a solo homer and an RBI single in two at-bats.
CITY WESTERN LEAGUE Mission Bay 6, University City 1--University City pitcher Aaron Root walked in two runs with the bases loaded to help the No. 6 Buccaneers (4-2, 11-5) snap their two-game losing streak. The win was Mission Bay’s second this season against the Centurions (3-3, 6-8). Sean Rees (5-2) got the win.
Kearny 7, Clairemont 4--Kearny committed six errors but held on for the win at Clairemont. Tom Williamson pitched a three-hitter for Kearny (3-3, 5-9). In the fourth, Kearny shortstop Lupe Ford singled in two runs. Clairemont (2-4, 5-8-1) scored its first three runs on errors.
University 7, La Jolla 5--Winning pitcher Tom Stilinovich went 3 for 4 to pace University (3-3, 7-8) over the Vikings (3-3, 5-9). Mike Hastings had a two-run triple in the fifth to give the Dons a 7-2 lead. Mike Owens was the loser.
CITY EASTERN LEAGUE Pt. Loma 2, Patrick Henry 0--Chris Reading pitched a three-hitter and Pat Evenson drove in the only runs of the game with a two-run triple in the fourth inning to lead the No. 7 Pointers (1-0, 12-3) past the Patriots (0-1, 9-4) in the league opener for both teams.
Morse 3, Madison 1--Morse scored three runs in the second inning on four Madison errors as the Tigers (1-0, 10-8) beat the Warhawks (0-1, 6-6). The Warhawks scored in the fourth on Mark Moore’s RBI single. Madison pitcher Scott Andersen (3-1) pitched a two-hitter in his first loss of the season. Paul Anderson got the win.
Mira Mesa 15, Serra 1--The defending San Diego Section 3-A champion Marauders (1-0, 9-9) had scored only one run in their last three games before routing the No. 4 Conquistadors. Mike Eicher pitched a complete game for Mira Mesa (1-0, 9-9). Serra is 0-1, 12-5.
NONLEAGUE Poway 9, San Pasqual 7--The Titans (9-5) won at home as defending Avocado League champion San Pasqual (5-7-1) lost its fourth straight.
