Gov. Mario Cuomo said today that he will seek a second four-year term, but he did not rule out a bid for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination.

In a letter to state Democratic Chairman Laurence Kirwan, Cuomo called the governor’s job exciting and challenging and said he wanted “to lead New York from the recovery we have already achieved to a new resurgence.”

But as expected, Cuomo refused to completely shut the door on a presidential bid.

At a news conference at the state Capitol, Cuomo said only, “I have no plans to run for the presidency” when pressed about whether he was ruling out a race for the White House.

But he refused to renew a 1982 campaign pledge to serve a full term in Albany.

The only announced Republican candidate for governor is Westchester County Executive Andrew O’Rourke.

On the Democratic side, Cuomo’s only announced opposition is a supporter of Lyndon LaRouche, Judah Philip Rubinstein. If Rubinstein succeeds in collecting enough valid signatures on nominating petitions, there will be a Democratic primary Sept. 9.
