To answer Turbow: The anonymous couple’s income taxes according to the Senate Finance Committee’s tax bill would be $4,275 and $4,659 for incomes of $28,500 and $29,925, respectively. (You should have pointed out that the 27% rate applies only to that part of the income above $28,500). But here is the real joker in the picture: Using the 1986 tax rates of the IRS, Mr. Doe’s taxes would be only $4,227 and $4,583 for the two above incomes; the new taxes proposed by the Senate actually result in a tax increase of $48 and $76 for this couple over present 1986 rates.
