San Diego AIA Chapter Honors 15 Architects

Fifteen winners from the San Diego area were recognized at the 1986 Awards Program sponsored by the San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architects at a program held at the Cruise Ship Terminal in San Diego.

Honor awards went to Smith & Others Architects for Grove House, a residential project singled out for its detailing and “no architectural cliches,” and a pool house addition. Another honor award winner was Grondona Architects for interior architecture of a cinnamon bun shop in Horton Plaza.

Merit awards and jury comments follow:

Coronado Addition (Residential Single-Family), by the Comstock-Galvin-Cristilli Partnership, renovation faithfully following the precedent of the original building.

Beachaus (Residential/Multi-Family and Tract), by Batter Kay Associates, multi-family town house complex in Solana Beach, with separation of entries, private outdoor space and well-lit interiors.

Prospect Point (Commercial/Retail/R&D;), a 35,000-square-foot mixed-use facility in La Jolla Martinez/Wong and Associates Inc. totally blended into the surrounding area.

Horton Plaza (Commercial/Retail/R&D;), by the Jerde Partnership, which drew comments with joyful expression and “idiosyncratic logic.”

Symphony Hall (Interior Architecture), designed by Deems/Lewis & Partners, “simply wonderful.”

CITATIONS OF RECOGNITION (Unbuilt Projects)

“Home Sweet Home,” by Pacific Associates Planners Architects, with upper level living spaces for maximum light and view, sleeping areas sheltered on the first and second floors.

Meltzhoff Addition, by Smith & Others Architects, a single-story home in La Jolla.

“Tower To The Stars,” by Grondona/Architects-AIA, includes a small tower in front for star gazing, poetic and magical, totally workable.

Morgan’s House of Furniture by Grondona Architects-AIA, incorporates giant pieces of furniture, juxtaposed to provide privacy, space and views, “very California.”

Unbuilt--San Diego

Studio/Residence at Mission Beach by Kevin Thomas Farrell Design & Planning, with a centrally located gallery to be used as a formal entry and transition zone, “nice proportions and great rigor.”

Special Projects

Coronado Design Guidelines by Rob Wellington Quigley, covers the design of new buildings and renovation of existing structures in commercial areas of Coronado, lauding the architect’s inclusion of role model buildings as design examples.

Rebuilding Plan for the Mountain View District of Normal Heights by the Normal Heights Community Design Assistance Team, co-chairs Joseph Martinez and Gary Weber, a sane and appropriate response to a national disaster, with a spirit and effort by participating architects to be highly commended.
