Reports of fires and leaking fuel in 1984-86 Ford Motor Co. E350 vans are being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Virginia officials, who license the vans for use as ambulances, said that one-third to one-half of local rescue agencies using the ambulances have reported incidents of fuel leaking or spurting out when the gasoline cap is removed. Ford said in a statement that it had inspected several problem vehicles and identified possible contributing factors, such as non-Ford fuel caps that do not properly relieve pressure.
