The driver of a pickup truck fatally injured a pedestrian in Pacoima Friday night, then raced away while being pursued by a witness, Los Angeles police reported.

The victim, who was carrying no identification and whose identity is not known, underwent surgery for major internal injuries at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills but died at 11:30 p.m., Sgt. Mel Cunningham said. The victim was described as a male Hispanic of medium height and weight.

The accident occurred at about 10:15 p.m. on Van Nuys Boulevard near Ralston Avenue, Cunningham said. Several witnesses reported that a red or orange truck struck the pedestrian, throwing him over its hood, Cunningham said.

A witness, identified by police as Anguiano Hilario, 24, of Pacoima, chased the fleeing truck along three freeways before the driver eluded him, Cunningham said.

Hilario returned to the accident scene and gave police all but one digit of the truck’s license number, Cunningham said.

Police described the suspect, who was alone in the truck, as a male Hispanic, 28 to 30 years old, with a mustache and full beard.
