The Hungarian Communist Party has ordered a new crackdown on dissidents, including restrictions on publishing and travel, dissident sources said. The Politburo, which met in secret session last month, also ordered establishment of a weekly “blacklist” of dissidents found to have published abroad. The reason for the new restrictions was not clear, but dissident sources speculated that the government is concerned about the upcoming 30th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian uprising, crushed by Soviet tanks, in which 5,000 people were killed and 40,000 were imprisoned.
