A pilot program in which jail inmates can complete their sentences at home, thanks to an electronic system that ensures they stay there, was recommended to the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
The program, seen by county officials as a way to reduce overcrowding at Orange County Jail, would include electronic equipment for 25 inmates. It would be part of the Orange County Jail’s work furlough program. But instead of returning to jail after leaving work, inmates would go to their own homes.
Only those who have served half their sentence but still have at least 30 days left would be eligible. They must also be employed full-time and a have a home telephone.
The system is used in Florida, and the Board of Supervisors asked county staff officials to look into it.
