Three Escondido residents died in the crash of a sports car that had been traveling at speeds of more than 100 m.p.h. before it went out of control and rolled end over end, throwing all three people from the car. Dead at the scene of the accident on old California 395 north of Escondido at Camino del Rey were Gilbert S. Ward, 30, and Jana K. Johnson, 24. A third victim, Frederick A. Stanfield, 33, died about three hours later at Palomar Memorial Hospital of massive head injuries. A California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said the accident occurred on the two-lane highway east of Interstate 15.
