The United States and Egypt began air and naval maneuvers in the Mediterranean. A U.S. Embassy spokesman in Cairo said five American warships, including the aircraft carrier Forrestal, are taking part in the five-day exercise. He refused to say how many Egyptians are involved, and Egypt’s Ministry of Defense made no comment. Libya denounced the operation as part of a U.S. “terrorist plot” to dominate the world.
