The Air Force unwittingly allowed computer tapes containing secret data about military satellites, aircraft and missiles to be offered for sale at public auctions of office furniture and supplies, Air Force auditors said. The Air Force Audit Agency found more than 1,200 magnetic tapes containing “sensitive, unclassified” data available for purchase at three out of seven bases it audited. Auditors did not try to determine whether any tapes actually had been sold or who might have bought them, but data on the tapes “could be useful to hostile agents,” they said.
