The World : 200 French Homes Burn

Share

About 1,500 firemen and soldiers backed by planes and helicopters fought to contain France’s worst forest fire of the year as flames engulfed homes and miles of woodland, resulting in the death of at least three people. Officials say the fire destroyed over 200 houses as it swept through isolated hamlets, and more than 1,000 people have been evacuated from isolated villages and summer campsites. The fire broke out Saturday in the Tanneron Massif, inland from the Mediterranean Cote d’Azur, sweeping through about 12,500 acres of dry forest area overnight as high winds fanned the flames.
