Members of the State Bar of California will be urged to refrain from joining or visiting private clubs that discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion or national origin, the Bar’s Board of Governors announced. Board members adopted a resolution to publish a letter in the Bar’s monthly magazine, California Lawyer Magazine, encouraging members to keep out of private clubs that discriminate. The proposal also urged law firms not to hold functions at clubs that discriminate and asked lawyers who belong to those clubs to work to reform policies. If a club is unwilling to reform its policies, the governors suggested that law firms not pay membership fees and encouraged lawyers not to use the club for professional or business purposes and to consider resigning.
