Major Latino Group Supports Bradley, Cranston
The Mexican-American Political Assn. on Sunday endorsed a slate of Democratic statewide candidates, including Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley for governor and U.S. Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.), who is seeking a fourth term.
The association, which members say is the largest Latino organization in the United States, has a policy against endorsing candidates who do not personally address its members.
Bradley, who is attempting to oust Republican Gov. George Deukmejian, and Cranston, who is running against Rep. Ed Zschau (R-Los Altos), both spoke to a MAPA convention of several hundred here on Saturday.
Deukmejian and Zschau did not attend.
The reelection bids of Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp and Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy also were endorsed in a vote among the 353 convention delegates. Their Republican opponents, Bruce Gleason and Mike Curb, respectively, also did not attend.
Delegates endorsed Assemblyman Gray Davis (D-Los Angeles), who is running for state controller, although they also were wooed by Davis’ Republican opponent, state Sen. Bill Campbell of Hacienda Heights.
“I am very proud to have MAPA’s endorsement. It is recognition that as controller I will serve all the people of California,” Davis said.
There were no endorsements for state treasurer or secretary of state.
