San Diego State University fraternities and sororities are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a man who raped a freshman student Sept. 6.

Ten sororities, at least two fraternities, the Interfraternity Council and the student government are part of a growing list of organizations that have so far pledged $1,225 in reward money, Doug Case, adviser to fraternities, said Monday.

The reward offer was proposed by the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. The 18-year-old woman, who had become separated from her friends, encountered the man outside that fraternity house about 1 a.m. Claiming to be a student, he offered to escort her home but raped her in bushes nearby, university officials said.

“We just want to get the guy caught,” said Blake McEfee, vice president of Lambda Chi Alpha. “We’re just trying to do our part (to) clean up the Greek image.”

The incident was one of three rape reports at SDSU this month. Friday, a 19-year-old student from UC Santa Barbara told police that she was raped in a fraternity house near the university.

A 21-year-old SDSU student was booked into County Jail in connection with the claim, but charges were dropped when the woman told campus police she was reluctant to press charges.

Another SDSU student reported early Sunday that she had been raped after attending a Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity party with a date after the SDSU football game Saturday night. She became separated from her date, left the party with the assailant and was raped in an apartment near campus, police said.
