U.S. Accepts Slur Explanation
The U.S. government said today it accepted Japan’s explanation that remarks by Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone which outraged American minorities were taken out of context and not intended as a slur against blacks, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans.
“Prime Minister Nakasone has repeatedly expressed to the President (Reagan) and to others his personal admiration for the vitality and accomplishments of American society without qualification,” State Department spokesman Charles Redman told reporters. “Given that record, we take the government of Japan’s clarification at face value.” (Nakasone’s remarks, Page 14.)
