Baseball Roundup : Red Sox Win, Clinch at Least Tie for Title
The Boston Red Sox clinched at least a tie for the American League East title Saturday by edging the Toronto Blue Jays, 2-0, at Boston on Bruce Hurst’s fifth consecutive victory this month.
Dwight Evans of the Red Sox hit a solo homer, his 26th of the season, after Toronto starter Jim Clancy (14-13) retired the first 14 batters. That was all Hurst needed, although Boston added another run in the seventh.
Hurst (13-7) scattered six hits, struck out eight and walked none. He is 8-2 with a 2.38 ERA in his last 11 starts, and 6-0 with a 1.68 ERA in seven starts at home.
“This is the greatest feeling in the world,” Hurst said after his fourth shutout, all at Fenway Park.
