Struggling Tiger International, parent of air-freight carrier Flying Tiger Line, which is asking its unions to grant concessions to cut costs, posted a modest profit for its third-quarter, the first profitable period since the third quarter of 1984. The company’s air-cargo operation actually showed a third-quarter operating profit of $8.1 million for the third quarter, but most of that was offset by a $7 million loss in foreign currency exchange because of the fluctuating values of the yen and the dollar. The company attributed the improved results in the latest quarter to a significant decline in aviation fuel prices.
