Santa Ana : Dannemeyer Says Koop Is Wrong on Prop. 64
U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, who has urged California voters to defeat Proposition 64, is misinformed about the anti-AIDS initiative, Rep. William E. Dannemeyer (R-Fullerton) said Thursday.
Koop said Wednesday that the Nov. 4 ballot initiative, which would classify AIDS as a “communicable disease” and bar people who carry the virus from working in schools or handling food, would be “very, very difficult to enforce.”
Dannemeyer, one of the most conservative members of the House and a leading supporter of Proposition 64, said Koop was wrong.
“He has been furnished with wrong information about what Proposition 64 will do,” Dannemeyer said at a news conference. “It appears his opinion is based on the fact that most public health officials are against the initiative.”
Those state health officials, Dannemeyer said, are victims of “propaganda” from opponents of Proposition 64, who claim the initiative would lead to compulsory AIDS testing and quarantining of AIDS victims.
