Melvin Avenue School Scores a Double Victory

Share

The Melvin Avenue Elementary School in Reseda got adopted Thursday, even though it wasn’t exactly an orphan--in fact, it came into the relationship with a pretty good pedigree.

During a ceremony to mark its sponsorship by the Warner Center Marriott Hotel as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Adopt-a-School program, Melvin also accepted a flag and a plaque from the Department of Education signifying its selection this year for the National Elementary School Recognition Award.

Melvin was the only Los Angeles school and one of 17 in California so honored.

The students sat through half a dozen speeches, listened to music and even provided some of their own, singing a song composed for the occasion. Then they marched off to their reward--cakes and punch served by hotel employees dressed resplendently in British regimental colors.
