Ireland’s coalition government narrowly won a confidence vote in Parliament, avoiding an early general election. The coalition of the Fine Gael and Labor parties won in an 83-to-81 vote after a revolt by two members evaporated at the last moment. The vote should enable Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald to remain in power until at least next January, when his next major problem will be hammering out a budget with his coalition partners. The main issues leading to the confidence test were a Dublin development plan and social welfare payments.
