It took all of a quarter and a half of football for Thursday night’s Garden Grove League game between La Quinta and Rancho Alamitos high schools to deteriorate from blowout to boredom.

La Quinta won, 42-6, in front of a very intimate crowd of 300 at Bolsa Grande High School that seemed to lose interest in the proceedings midway through the second quarter.

It was then that La Quinta players started to mug on the sidelines to friends and parents in the crowd. It was then that Aztec touchdown celebrations were relegated to a firm handshake.

The Aztecs (2-0, 4-3) scored 35 points in the first half. Quarterback Derek Debbs, playing part time in the first half and none in the second, completed 11 of 20 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown.

Debbs’ touchdown pass was a 20-yard completion to wide receiver Lee Fraser to make the score 21-0 with 8:44 left in the second quarter.

In the first half, La Quinta compiled 353 yards of total offense to Rancho Alamitos’ 25. Because of injuries, only 25 players suited up for Rancho Alamitos (0-2, 0-6-1).

“Given their situation I had expected something like this to happen,” said Roger Takahashi, La Quinta Coach.

Since he had expected it, Takahashi said his team dedicated this game to the La Quinta players who normally don’t play. No wonder then that the game’s loudest cheer was reserved for Robert Tiboni, a 235-pound lineman and reserve placekicker, when he kicked an extra point to make the score 42-0.

La Quinta running back Alan Stevenson rushed 10 times for 114 yards and 3 touchdowns.
