Orange : Police Make Fast Arrest in Holdup Near Station

A Tustin man was arrested Friday after he allegedly robbed a bank across the street from the Police Department.

Police arrested Richard Keith Leasure, 31, of Tustin five minutes after a teller reported a robbery at the Bank of America branch at 345 E. Chapman Ave., police spokesman Bob Gustafson said.

Orange city offices are directly across the street from the bank, Gustafson said.

However, none of the nine officers who responded to the call ran over from the station, he said. “We’re maybe 90 feet from the bank--but that didn’t really play a role,” Gustafson said.

Two officers who were patrolling downtown in separate cars arrived within 45 seconds of the teller’s call, which came at 11:05 a.m., Gustafson said. Police searched the area and reportedly found Leasure lying in the back of a van parked at 100 N. Grand St., next to the bank parking lot. Witnesses identified Leasure as the robber, Gustafson said.

Police recovered about $1,000 in cash. Leasure was booked at County Jail on suspicion of bank robbery and held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
