A five-day strike by bus and taxi drivers that paralyzed the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and other urban areas ended peacefully, with full service expected. The drivers joined a general strike Monday and Tuesday then decided to extend the work stoppage for the rest of the work week. The strike coincided with a visit by Lt. Gen. Henri Namphy, head of a civilian-military ruling council, to the United States. The strike was called to pressure the three members of the National Governing Council to resign and call immediate elections. The council has ruled Haiti since shortly after President-for-Life Jean-Claude (Baby Doc) Duvalier fled into exile in February.
