Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Cao Scores 25 and Guides Bolsa Grande Into Finals

Nam Cao scored 25 points to lead Bolsa Grande High School to a 70-62 victory over Western in the semifinals of the Garden Grove Tournament at Garden Grove High School Thursday night.

Bolsa Grande (2-0) meets Pacifica at 8 tonight in the finals. Western will play Garden Grove at 6:15 p.m. for third place.

Bolsa Grande built a big lead early in the game, but Western went to a zone defense and caught up in the third quarter.

The lead changed hands early in the final quarter, but Bolsa Grande scored six unanswered points with just over four minutes left to put the game away.

Joe Small scored 16 points for Bolsa Grande and Tony Beal added 12. Will Jefferson and Mark Sanchez led Western with 16 points apiece and Chris Bowen added 14 points in the losing cause.

In another Garden Grove Tournament game:

El Dorado 63, Fullerton 61--Mike Renaud’s outside jumper with six seconds left broke a 61-61 tie and gave the Golden Hawks (1-1) the victory. Dave Pierce of Eldorado led all scorers with 18 points. Fullerton fell to 0-2.

In the Cerritos-Gahr Tournament:

Cypress 58, Valley Christian 55--Matt Pekrul scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds and Matt Civitelli scored 14 points to lead the Centurions to the victory in the second round of the losers’ bracket. Steve Kortenhoven led Valley Christian with 18 points. Cypress raised its record to 1-1. Valley Christian fell to 0-2.

Sunny Hills 71, Cerritos 38--Marcus Hopkins’ 16 points sparked the Lancers (2-0) to the victory. Sunny Hills meets Long Beach Millikan in tonight’s semifinals.

Long Beach Wilson 55, Artesia 47--Lantz Simpson had 15 points for the Wilson victory. Tony Farmer scored 18 points for Artesia.

Santa Monica 58, San Bernardino 40--Keith Neal led all scorers with 20 points to pace the Vikings’ victory.

Gahr 50, Glendora 49--Ike Withers and Joe Cubit scored 11 points apiece as Gahr prevailed.

In the Valencia Tournament:

Fontana 67, Esperanza 52--Mike Flynn scored 16 points as the Steelers won this fifth-place semifinal game. Ross Harvey scored 17 points for the Aztecs. Fontana meets Valencia’s B team for fifth place this afternoon.

Valencia 48, Westminster 46--Jeff Franck scored a layup at the buzzer to win it for the Tigers. Valencia meets Mater Dei in the championship game at 8 tonight.

In the San Luis Obispo Tournament:

Ocean View 58, San Marcos 42--Desi Hazely scored 17 points as the Seahawks captured the first-round game.

In the Lancer Invitational Tournament:

Trabuco Hills 63, Los Angeles Lutheran 41--John Welch scored 17 points in this first-round game as the Mustangs (2-0) rolled into tonight’s championship game against Orange Lutheran at Orange Lutheran.

Gordon McNeill added 11 points for Trabuco Hills. The Lions (0-1) were led by Jeff Young’s 16 points and 12 points by Gary Dempsey.

Los Angeles Lutheran plays Newport Christian today in the consolation bracket.

Orange Lutheran 70, Newport Christian 41--Jason Neben scored 14 points and three teammates scored in double figures as Orange Lutheran (1-1) overwhelmed Newport Christian to advance to the finals tonight against Trabuco Hills.

Paul Helbock had 12 points and Brad Busse and Kelly Black scored 10 points each for the tournament host. Scott Cooper led Newport Christian (0-1) with 14 points.

In nonleague play:

Santa Ana 50, Garey 37--Mike Mitchell scored 15 points and Willie Lane added 14 points to lead the Saints to the victory at Santa Ana.
