Working the Transit Strike

I am proud to say that I am the wife of a “working” Orange County Transit District bus driver. My husband exercised his right to freedom of choice and returned to work even though a strike had been called.

Needless to say, there is a “brave” element among the strikers who travel in packs, never one on one, threatening those who have the courage of their convictions. And who is to say what gutsy group sneaked out in the middle of the night to vandalize the homes and property of those who disagreed with their views.

I was always under the impression that the man who signed the paychecks could call the shots. If employees don’t like the rules of the game, they have two ways to go--learn to adjust or find an employer who is lenient enough to suit their work ethics.

If a person doesn’t use drugs, why worry about a drug test? If a person doesn’t suffer from the chronic “diseases” of tardiness and absenteeism, why worry about more stringent rules? If an employer wants to cut costs by hiring part-time help, doesn’t it seem plausible that the company then becomes more profitable and the phrase “job security” becomes more than just a phrase.

Start thinking and stop listening. Whatever the decision, follow it with dignity and remember that the other guy has made a decision, too.
