Cardinal John J. O’Connor, the archbishop of New York, toured northern Israel, where he worshiped along the shores of the Sea of Galilee, the site of Jesus’ ministy, and visited with handicapped children during a hospital tour in the Mediterranean port city of Haifa. The Roman Catholic prelate was free--at least for a day--of the embarrassing political controversy that marred the start of his trip, when he canceled meetings with Israeli leaders under pressure from the Vatican.Vatican policy bans meetings with Israeli officials in Jerusalem because the Holy See does not recognize Israeli control over the city.
