Mine Closes, Union Leader Hangs Self

NAGASAKI, Japan —
The trade union leader at Japan’s oldest coal mine has killed himself two months after the mine was shut after 300 years of operation, police said Thursday.
Police said Kiyoshi Yamasaki, 48, secretary general of the Mitsubishi Takashima Mine trade union, hanged himself in a hotel near here.
