Massachusetts’ highest court ruled in favor of Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave in her civil rights suit against the Boston Symphony Orchestra for canceling her contract for a series of performances in 1982. The cancellation occurred after public protests centering on Redgrave’s support of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The 5-2 opinion by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, however, was only an interim step in the case. The ruling interpreting the state’s civil rights law enables the U.S. 1st Circuit Court of Appeals to continue its consideration of an appeal by Redgrave.
